Lucky couple scooped a staggering £24.9m playing EuroMillions. “It’s a legacy for the children, I can’t comprehend the figure, it is something I would never have imagined.”
Brian and Joan Caswell from Bolton have jumped into third place in The National Lottery Rich List after winning a staggering £24,951,269.40. They banked half of the top prize in the EuroMillions draw on Friday June 12th, 2009.
Brian and Joan have quietly celebrated with close family across the weekend after learning of the win on Saturday morning.
Brian went to his local shop as he does every Saturday to settle his paper bill and check his numbers. He recalled, “I had won £10 the week before so walked in all confident and said to the lad, I’m on a roll – here’s another winner.
“When he scanned the ticket his mouth dropped open and he went a little ashen. He called for his boss to verify the numbers and told me to contact Camelot. I didn’t have my glasses so couldn’t even read the numbers on the ticket he gave me, so I headed home to get it into focus.”
After consulting with Joan and daughter Helen, they called Camelot who confirmed the amazing win. The couple stayed in on Saturday night before Brian kept his feet on the ground with a trip to his local allotment on Sunday.
By now rumours of a local winner were circling and he was amused to hear a fellow gardener comment that he bet the winner wasn’t up here ‘digging the soil’ after winning nearly £25 million.
Joan believes the win was instigated by her mother, who died two years ago, and who always bought lottery tickets for each member of the family.

oan revealed, “Brian always took mum shopping on Friday morning and she would return with tickets for each of us. She would make us each choose one and would then call on Sunday morning to make sure we had checked our numbers and to see who had won. Brian has carried on buying his tickets each Friday since she passed away and as soon as she heard my daughter said it must be Nanny’s tickets which had won.”
Brian’s first purchase will be a Range Rover which he has had his eye on for a while. Beyond that and the house it is travel plans which dominate the couple’s thoughts.
He said, “I travelled a lot for work but never got to go to South America and I have always wanted to go to Rio. Joan isn’t a keen flyer but it will be much easier to persuade her now we can afford to go in the front of the plane. Also I would like to stand at the foot of Everest, I once flew over it and I would love to see it from the other end.”
